DIY Water Filtration

Today we are going to discuss water filtration methods.  All filtration methods have basically the same principles and can be changed to what is needed in the situation.

The basic list of supplies are a container, sand, gravel, aquarium charcoal or you can use charcoal from your wood fire (gravel size pieces), cheese cloth or bandanna or cotton balls, or coffee filter.

To start with, you need a container. Cut the bottom end of the soda bottle off evenly. If there is no container available, you have to use what material that nature can provide, or that you brought with you.

First, you need to make the filter layer.
Find some filter material you can place at the bottom. For instance use the bandanna or the cheesecloth and cotton balls/coffee filters.

Add a layer of charcoal, sand, then add a layer of gravel.

Your collection bottle or cup should go under your inverted soda bottle. You can put the cap on the bottle with a few holes in it to slow the water. The slower the filtration, the cleaner your water will be.

Collect some water. Pour your collected water through the filter from the top. Look at the water that comes out of the filter. It should be clear. If not, you may have to pass the water through the filter more than once.

Safe water (Purification of your water)

Now you know how to make a water filter, but to get safe water to drink, you also have to purify your water. The water may still contain harmful bacteria that your filter did not remove.

To purify your water the best method is boiling, but if that is not an option use commercial water purifying tablets, bleach, or iodine drops.

We will going into purification of water this week so don’t worry.
