Before we jump into different types of grain, we should spend a few minutes discussing what they are and why you should store them. So here goes…
Grain what is it?
Well grain is a small dry one-seeded fruit of a cereal grass, having the fruit and the seed walls united. Grain is cereal grasses considered as a group. Now that we know what it is, why is it important is the next question we ask ourselves.
Why is it important?
Grains are important because they contain carbohydrates. Carbohydrates break down sugars, sugar goes into blood. Carbohydrates keep your blood sugar at a normal level (unless your diabetic) which keeps you alive. Since grains contain carbohydrates and carbohydrates have a very important job, grains are very important. Grains keep you alive. They are a very important part of your diet.
So now you know the ins and outs of grain, you hopefully have a better understanding on how important it is for you to add them to your food storage. That is why grains are always thought of as the most common staple in food storage. Which is also an inexpensive and easily stored items.
So start to think of grains as the foundation of your long term food storage, every meal should include some form of grain in it. Whole grains have a high nutritional value and protein. If your family does not regularly eat whole grains, you need to start introducing your family to them.
One of the fears that people have about food storage is that wheat is a staple and many don’t know how to use grains, and what they need to have to be able to grind the grains. Well don’t fear, there are ways you can use grains without a grinder we will give you some tips later when we go into more detail. But for now just know that you can have and store wheat for pennies on the dollar compared to some other items you should have in your food storage.
So grains can be thought of building blocks of your food storage. Use the the time now to get antiquated with them and learn how to use them in your everyday meals. Whole grains are a much healthier alternative than white flour, so you can take your grains and make them into flour. That would be the most common and easiest thing to start with, until you are comfortable with using different types of grain.
Storing grain is easy to do as you can use 5 gallon buckets which are easy to stack. Containers can be purchased online or even given away for free. You can check with your local supermarkets to see if they are willing to give their buckets away. Also restaurants may give them to you if you ask, so look around you might be able to find them without spending money, but if you need buckets or lids we can help.
