Ok moving on from kidney beans to lentils. Anyone know what a lentil is? Well besides the obvious that it is a bean of some sort. Many beans can be used for protein instead of meat, lots of vegetarians use them instead.

What Really is a Lentil?

Well, lentils are legumes, related to beans and peanuts, and are flat, disk shaped dried beans resembling dried split peas in appearance, although they are not as sweet. If you did not grow up in the middle east, you might not consider lentils a basic food, but they are a great food to get to know and add to your home food storage. By adding Lentils and other legumes (AKA Beans) to your food storage will add variety and keep your family from getting food burn out.

Unlike other dried legumes, lentils do not require the soaking time of other legumes. One of the reasons lentils are a great legume to use is that on their own they do not have strong flavor. They do a great job of absorbing flavors and spices of the other ingredients used in the dish. That makes then easy to add to other dishes for added protein or if you want to substitute for meat.
