Well with all the food storage preparations, and storing food, what do you do to hide it? Well it brought to mind the game of hide and seek. Now you see me now you don’t. If the police force or robbers break into your home will they find all your food storage and supplies?
Having a bedroom converted into your storage room puts all your eggs in one basket so to speak. So with that in mind go around your home and look at it with new eyes. Can you see your food storage? If you can do you have some stored else where that is not so noticeable? What about emergency supplies, tools, cooking stoves, fuel, etc.? Can you hide it where it won’t be found without difficulty? Do you have the money to create false walls?
Depending on where you live you might have an attic, basement, storage shed. Here we are the temperatures reach above 100 degrees in the summer so we can not store our food out in the shed or garage. If you live at sea level you have no basement. So depending on where you live, you will have to figure out how to store your supplies where an untrained eye would not find it.
What you need to do is be creative, store items high up or low to the ground, cover it with household items, use boxes that say kitchen appliances such as coffee maker, or paper boxes with summer clothes, kids toys, or other such items in them. Can you place items under beds, couches, behind books on a shelf? Anything you can do is better than leaving it out in the open.
If you place items into boxes make sure that you place them behind and under boxes with the real summer clothes or kids toys. It is also a good idea to place some real items on top of your secret stash in the box so if anyone opens the boxes will see items not your food storage. make sure to tape your boxes up , anything that makes it harder for people to open is also a deterrent. Make sure that your food storage in a box labeled baby clothes doesn’t weigh to heavy as that is a dead give away that something isn’t right and requires further investigation. How about the old board games that you have? you can store smaller items in them and them just stick them up on the shelf with all the other games.
If you are lucky enough to have a basement to use for storage, make sure that up place item onto pallets or shelves in case your basement gets flooded. You don’t want to waste all that money and time it took if the basement floods. Cover with household items and make them hard to open.
If you are storing items in the garage, the same applies make sure they are off the floor in case of flooding and hidden out of site with natural items in front and on top. Making it hard and even dangerous for others to go poking around.
Closets are also a given, but if you do use them, place items underneath a lot of shoes and blankets and other such items so that it would require a little work to sort thru. The best way to hide something is to have your kids pretend they are looking for Christmas presents and see where they look.
Notes to remember are that you still need to be able to rotate your storage so at least make a list so you know where things are. Also the messier the better, people think that if you are not a neat person, how could you be hiding your food storage. This may sound a little strange or even crazy to some but with the way things go and the government cleaning out warehouses for their food storage, do you think they won’t come to your house? If not them then someone else who might be worse.
So prepare for the worst and hope for the best. But remember with enough preplanning and division of your assets you should be ok even if they do find one of your hiding spots. Make sure not to keep all your eggs in one basket. Have a few boxes stored in different areas so if they do get one they might not find the rest.
