Wild, Brown or White?

Well so far we have covered wheat, oats, white flour, cornmeal, so now on to rice. Well lets learn about rice. We know that you need 400 pounds of grains per person for 1 year of food storage, so to add variety to your food storage, add some rice in with your other grains.

Types of Rice

There are a few different types of rice; white rice, brown rice, and wild rice.

White Rice

By doing this it alters the texture and flavor and appearance of the rice, while removing nutrients from the grain. It helps extend the shelf life of the rice and to prevent spoilage. After milling, the rice is polished, resulting in a seed with a bright, white, shiny appearance. White rice is then enriched with some of the nutrients that were removed during the processing.

To produce white rice, the next layers underneath the husk (the bran layer and the germ) are removed the oil is also removed. One mineral not added back into white rice is magnesium; one cup of cooked long grain brown rice contains 84 mg of magnesium while one cup of white rice contains 19 mg.
